What an IT support technician does

An IT support technician keeps the day-to-day technology in your workplace working. That includes setting up new computers and phones, installing software, managing user accounts, fixing hardware faults, connecting printers and resolving network or email problems. In smaller organizations the technician may be the only IT person on site, while in larger ones they handle desk-side support and escalate complex issues to administrators or vendors.

When a technician is slow or unclear, every employee waiting on a fix loses time. A strong technician solves problems properly the first time, keeps records of what they did and treats staff with patience. Finch screens candidates for practical troubleshooting, the operating systems and tools in your environment and their manner with non-technical users, so the people you interview are ready to support your team.

Hiring an IT support technician: common questions

Is one IT support technician enough for our office?

That depends on your number of users, how many sites you have and how complex your systems are. Some organizations pair one in-house technician with an outside provider for after-hours and specialist work. We talk this through during the consultation so the person we find has the right level of independence for your setup.

What is the difference between an IT support technician and a help desk analyst?

There is overlap. A help desk analyst usually handles requests by phone, chat and remote access, often in high volume. An IT support technician more often works hands-on with equipment at your location. If you need someone to physically set up devices and visit desks, a technician is usually the better fit.
