Finch Employment

Finance, real estate & crypto recruitmentInsurance recruitment in Toronto and the GTA

Finch helps brokerages, insurers, managing general agencies and adjusting firms hire licensed, client-ready insurance professionals for Toronto, the GTA and roles across Canada.

Insurance hiring has a licensing layer that many recruiters overlook. In Ontario, general insurance brokers are licensed by RIBO, while life agents and independent adjusters are licensed by FSRA, and each licence comes with its own sponsorship, supervision and continuing education rules. On top of that, you need people who explain coverage clearly, handle renewals and claims with care, and keep files in order for audits and regulators.

Finch Employment works on a retainer basis for insurance employers in Toronto and across the GTA, and runs searches for employers elsewhere in Canada by phone and video. We start with a consultation about your lines of business, systems and clients. Then we advertise, source and screen candidates, confirm licence status, present a shortlist of suitable people and arrange interviews. After the start date, we follow up to see how the hire is settling in.

Why insurance hiring takes a specialist

Licences are not interchangeable: a RIBO broker licence, an FSRA life licence and an adjuster licence each permit different work, and some cannot be held together.

Personal lines, commercial lines, life, group benefits and claims each need different product knowledge, so general insurance experience does not always transfer to your book.

Experienced producers and account managers often bring client relationships with them, which raises questions about non-solicitation terms and realistic expectations for the first year.

Many strong candidates are already employed and studying toward designations such as the CIP, so they weigh support for education and career progression closely.

How we screen insurance candidates

  • Licence type, level and status with RIBO or FSRA, and any conditions or supervision requirements attached
  • Experience in your lines of business, insurer markets and client types, and the size of book handled
  • Progress toward designations such as the CIP, FCIP, CAIB or CLU where relevant to the role
  • Client communication, documentation habits and comfort with your broker management or claims system
  • Eligibility to work in Canada, location and availability for in-office, hybrid or field work

Insurance recruitment: questions employers ask

Can you recruit candidates who are not yet licensed?

Yes, for some roles. Customer service and support positions may suit people who are studying for a RIBO or LLQP exam, and some employers prefer to sponsor new licensees. We confirm during the consultation which tasks the person will perform, because licensed activities must be done by licensed staff, and we screen candidates against that requirement.

Do you recruit insurance staff for employers outside Ontario?

Yes. Searches for employers elsewhere in Canada are run by phone and video from our Toronto office. Insurance licensing is provincial, so a candidate licensed in Ontario may need a licence in your province before doing licensed work there. We confirm which licence your province requires and screen for it.

What does an insurance search cost?

Finch charges a retainer agreed for each position, based on its requirements such as licence level, line of business and seniority. The retainer is paid when the search begins. During the consultation we set out the fee and exactly what the search includes, so you can decide before any work starts.
