Accounting & finance recruitment: questions employers ask
How do you confirm a candidate's CPA designation?
CPA Ontario maintains a public register of its members, and we use it to confirm that a candidate holds the designation they claim. For candidates still completing the CPA Professional Education Program, we ask where they are in the program and confirm it during reference checks. Accurate credentials matter, especially for senior roles.
Do we need a CPA, or will a bookkeeper do?
For day-to-day transactions, reconciliations and payroll support, an experienced bookkeeper is often enough. If you need financial statements prepared to accounting standards, tax planning, budgeting or management reporting, a CPA or an accountant working toward the designation is usually the better choice. We help you define the level of expertise during the consultation.
Can you recruit finance staff for a company using specific software?
Yes. Software experience is one of the first things we ask about. Whether you use QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics or an industry-specific ERP, we include it in the search and check each candidate's real level of experience, not just whether the system appears on their résumé.
