Alberta's hiring needs move with the energy sector more than most provinces, but the province is broader than oil and gas. Calgary has a large concentration of head offices, finance and technology firms. Edmonton is the provincial capital, with a strong public sector, universities and a petrochemical industry to its northeast. Cities such as Red Deer, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie anchor agriculture, energy services and health care across their regions. Finch tailors each search to the city and sector your business is in.

Alberta also differs from other provinces in how some professions are licensed. The Real Estate Council of Alberta licenses both real estate professionals and mortgage brokers, engineers register with APEGA, and trade certification runs through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training system. We confirm credentials against the right Alberta body and check that every candidate is already eligible to work in Canada. The retainer for each position is agreed before the search starts, and fees are based on the requirements of the role.

Hiring in Alberta

Calgary's head offices and finance

Calgary hosts many energy company head offices along with banks, investment firms and a growing technology community. Employers frequently need accountants, payroll and HR leaders, and executives who can manage through commodity cycles. Experienced professionals here often have options, so a clear brief and a fast, organized interview process make a real difference.

Fort McMurray and the energy regions

The oil sands around Fort McMurray and energy activity near Grande Prairie create steady demand for heavy-duty equipment technicians, industrial electricians, safety coordinators and site administrators. Some roles involve rotational schedules or remote camps, and we discuss those conditions openly so the people you interview know exactly what the job involves.

How we recruit for employers in Alberta

Alberta searches start with a phone or video consultation scheduled in Mountain time. We cover the role, the schedule, whether there is a rotation or camp component, and what candidates are likely to be weighing against your offer. Once the retainer for the position is agreed, we advertise, source and screen, drawing on candidates in Alberta and, where it makes sense, professionals elsewhere in Canada who would consider a move west.

Screening for Alberta roles includes checking registration with APEGA, CRNA, RECA or the relevant college, confirming trade certificates and Red Seal endorsements, and asking about the safety tickets a site requires. We also confirm each candidate is eligible to work in Canada. Interviews are arranged by video or at your location, and we stay involved through the offer and follow up after the new hire starts.

Recruiting in Alberta: common questions

Do mortgage brokers and real estate agents in Alberta hold the same licence?

No. Both are licensed by the Real Estate Council of Alberta, but they are separate licences under the same regulator. When you hire a mortgage associate or broker, we confirm the candidate holds the correct RECA mortgage licence for the role, not only a real estate licence, before they reach your shortlist.

Can you recruit for rotational or camp-based roles?

Yes. We recruit for roles in Fort McMurray, northern Alberta and other sites where work is scheduled in rotations. We explain the schedule, travel arrangements and site conditions to each candidate early, and we only put forward people who have confirmed they can work that pattern.

How do trade certificates from other provinces work in Alberta?

Red Seal endorsements are recognized across provinces, which helps journeypersons move to Alberta. Some designated trades in Alberta can only be practised by certified journeypersons or registered apprentices. We confirm each candidate's certification and endorsements, and if your role needs an Alberta-specific credential, we flag it before interviews are booked.
