What a marketing coordinator does

A marketing coordinator turns marketing plans into finished work. They schedule campaigns, prepare and proofread content, update the website, coordinate trade shows and events, work with designers, printers and agencies, and pull together reports on what performed. In a small company the coordinator may be the entire marketing department; in a larger one they support a manager and specialists. Either way, they are the person who makes sure nothing slips between the idea and the launch.

The best coordinators combine organization with good judgement about brand and writing. Finch screens for both. We look at the range of tasks candidates have handled, the tools they used and the quality of the work they produced, and we ask for samples where it helps. We also check how they manage competing deadlines, since coordinators often juggle requests from sales, leadership and outside vendors in the same week.

  • Write, edit and proofread copy for email, web, brochures and social posts

  • A college diploma or university degree in marketing, communications or a related field is typical
  • Some hands-on marketing experience, through a previous role, co-op placement or internship
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills in English
  • Familiarity with email marketing, content management and social media platforms

Hiring a marketing coordinator: common questions

Is a marketing coordinator enough if we have no marketing team?

It can be, if someone senior is setting direction, such as an owner or sales leader. A coordinator is strongest at execution and may not be ready to build strategy alone. If you need someone to plan as well as deliver, we may suggest a more senior marketing generalist and explain the difference during the consultation.

Should we ask candidates for a portfolio?

For most coordinator roles, yes. Writing samples, campaign examples or event materials show far more than a résumé, and candidates should be able to explain their own contribution to each piece. Where a portfolio is thin because the work belonged to a previous employer, a short, fair exercise relevant to your business can fill the gap.
