What a production worker does

Production workers keep your line moving. They feed materials, monitor equipment, check finished goods against standards, keep their station clean and report problems before they become downtime. In a busy plant they may rotate between stations or cover for operators during breaks. It is often an entry point into your company, and a good production worker is the person you later promote to operator or lead hand, so the hire matters more than the job title suggests.

The cost of a poor fit shows up fast: missed targets, quality rejects and a supervisor who spends the week retraining. Finch looks past the resume to find candidates with a steady work record, a realistic understanding of production work and a reliable way to reach your site for the hours you run. You meet a shortlist of people who are ready to start and learn, and you hire them directly onto your team.

Typical responsibilities

  • Load raw materials and components onto lines or into machines
  • Monitor the line and flag jams, defects or equipment faults to the operator or lead
  • Inspect finished products visually and remove items that do not meet standard
  • Count, label and stage finished goods for packaging or shipping
  • Keep the work area clean and follow housekeeping and sanitation routines
  • Follow standard operating procedures, safety rules and personal protective equipment requirements

Qualifications and credentials

  • No licence is required; employers typically look for previous plant, warehouse or line experience
  • Ontario's mandatory worker health and safety awareness training, and WHMIS for sites with hazardous products
  • Ability to stand for long periods, lift materials and work at a steady pace
  • Basic English reading for work instructions, labels and safety signs
  • Food manufacturers often prefer candidates familiar with GMP and food safety practices

Hiring a production worker: common questions

Can Finch find production workers for early morning or overnight hours?

Yes. We discuss your hours in the consultation and screen every candidate for their ability to work them, including how they will get to your plant when transit is limited. Being upfront about the schedule at the start reduces the chance that a new hire leaves in the first few weeks because the hours were not what they expected.

Do production workers need experience on our exact equipment?

Not usually. Most plants train production workers on their own lines. What matters more is a track record of reliable attendance, following procedures and working safely. If your process requires specific experience, such as food handling or clean room work, we make that a screening requirement and only shortlist candidates who have it.
