What a plant manager does
A plant manager is responsible for everything that happens inside a manufacturing or processing facility. They lead production, maintenance, quality and shipping teams, set and track output, cost and quality targets, plan capital improvements, manage labour and scheduling, and keep the site safe and compliant. In many companies they also manage relationships with unions, key customers and corporate leadership. When a plant runs well, it is usually because its manager has built strong systems and a strong team.
Manufacturing environments vary widely, from food and beverage to automotive parts, plastics, metal fabrication and packaging. Finch screens plant manager candidates for experience in comparable processes and regulations, their safety leadership and their record of improving output, quality and cost. We look for Lean or continuous improvement experience, sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and, for some employers, an engineering degree or a P.Eng. licensed through Professional Engineers Ontario.
