What a walk-in clinic doctor does

Walk-in clinic doctors see unscheduled patients with a wide range of concerns, from minor infections and injuries to prescription renewals and sick notes. The work rewards quick, sound clinical judgment and clear communication, because most visits are short and patients may not return. For the clinic owner, the physician's reliability matters as much as their skill: an unfilled shift means turning patients away and leaving staff idle.

Walk-in physicians are often part time, combining clinic shifts with other practice, so scheduling flexibility is a key part of the match. Finch asks which days and hours you need covered, how busy a typical shift is, what support staff and EMR you use, and how compensation is structured. We then look for doctors whose availability lines up with your schedule and who are comfortable with the pace of your clinic.

Typical responsibilities

  • Assess and treat unscheduled patients presenting with acute and minor illnesses and injuries
  • Renew prescriptions appropriately and identify when a patient needs ongoing care elsewhere
  • Complete the forms, notes and referrals required during a visit
  • Document every encounter clearly in the clinic's EMR for follow-up and billing
  • Recognize urgent presentations and direct patients to emergency care when needed
  • Communicate results and follow-up instructions according to clinic protocols

  • CPSO registration that permits independent practice
  • Active OHIP billing number
  • CMPA membership or equivalent medical liability protection
  • Broad primary care knowledge and comfort with high-volume episodic care
  • Working knowledge of how walk-in visits interact with patient enrolment models in Ontario

Hiring a walk-in clinic doctor: common questions

Can we hire a walk-in doctor for just a few shifts a week?

Yes. Many walk-in physicians prefer a set number of shifts alongside other work. Tell us exactly which shifts you need covered and how consistent they are, and we will look for physicians whose availability fits. Being specific about evenings and weekends helps, since those are often the hardest shifts to fill.

How is a walk-in doctor different from a locum?

A walk-in physician usually works recurring shifts at your clinic seeing unscheduled patients. A locum typically covers another physician's practice for a defined period, often caring for that doctor's own patients. If you need both ongoing walk-in coverage and temporary practice coverage, we can discuss the two searches together.
